Examine how China’s history, culture, and politics affect the development and practice of its educational policy. Take part in a cultural immersion program conducted by Beijing Foreign Studies University, China’s most prestigious foreign studies university. Travel to Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’An, and act as Goucher’s ambassadors as you visit educational institutions that represent the components of China’s educational system.

Eligibility, Prerequisites, and Academic Credit
Applicants should have sophomore standing and must attend a preparatory 1-credit course (ED 272Y) which will be held during the last seven weeks of Spring 2018. Students will take the 3-credit course abroad. Applicants for this ICA should have a 3.0 GPA or permission of the program directors. No language prerequisites are required for this course. Interviews with the program directors may be required as part of the application process.
Application and Study Abroad Deadlines
November 6, 2017: Online application & $50 application fee due
December 1, 2017: $500 non-refundable deposit is due
February 16, 2018: Final payment and ICA health forms due
The tentative cost of the program is $5,970. This fee includes lodging, all meals, transportation within China as well as seminars, entrance fees, and insurance. This price also includes international airfare from the gateway city (TBD) to China and back to the US gateway city.
All students are eligible to apply for an OIS ICA scholarship, which is also due November 6, 2017. The scholarship can be found online at abroad.goucher.edu. If you are a Pell Grant recipient and US citizen studying abroad in one country for at least 3 weeks (21 days), you are eligible to apply for the Gilman scholarship where you can be awarded up to $3,000 in aid for your study abroad. Please contact Jennifer White at OIS during her walk-in office hours (Mon.-Thu. 2:30-4pm) in order for her to help you submit the best possible application by the October 3, 2017 deadline for early summer 2018 notification or by March 6, 2018 for regular summer notification.
Students are required to have passports for all Goucher programs. Failure to have a passport will prohibit participation in the program.
Estimated Passport Processing Time:
Routine Service: approximately 6-8 weeks from the time of application, including mailing time
