Program Overview

During this Intensive Course Abroad, students can complete either SP120, SP130, or SP299 in Granada, Nicaragua during the January 2018 term. Students will take Spanish language, conversation, and culture classes daily and will visit numerous cultural and historical sites in and around the city of Granada. These excursions will bring to life many of the topics covered in Gateway to Nicaragua, a required course for all accepted applicants during the second seven weeks of fall semester. As part of the total immersion experience, participants will stay with Nicaraguan host families.

Eligibility, Prerequisites, and Academic Credit

This ICA is open to students with a 2.0 or higher GPA who have completed, are currently enrolled, or will be enrolled in Fall 2017 in either SP 120 or SP 110. Those recommended into SP 130 or SP 120 via Goucher's Spanish Placement Test are also eligible. To earn independent work credits for SP 299, students must have completed or be currently enrolled in SP 229 or any 200/300 level course in Spanish. Students will receive 1 credit for the course Gateway to Nicaragua taught during the second seven weeks of the Fall 2017 semester. Students will receive 4 credits for the three-week intensive course abroad. Students will obtain a total of 5 credits.

March 24, 2017: Application & 50 application fee due
May 5, 2017: $500 non-refundable deposit is due
September 22, 2017: Final payment due

Program Costs

The tentative cost of the program is $4,050. This fee includes lodging, all meals in the homestays (breakfasts, lunches, and dinners), group international airfare from Dulles, VA,  transportation within the host country, excursions and insurance. This information is accurate at the time of publication, but is subject to change.

Financial Aid
All students are eligible to apply for OIS scholarships via separate application here. Students who qualify for the voucher are able to apply the voucher to the cost of the program. Students entering Goucher beginning in Fall 2014 may apply for a Goucher Global Grant in lieu of the study abroad voucher.

Passport and Visa Information
